Perhaps you have heard other women talk about how pumping
breastmilk is a chore, and now you are worried about how it
will be when you start pumping breastmilk. Do not worry about
it! Here are some tips to help you ensure that your time spent
pumping is time well-spent!
· Pump frequently – It is better to express milk
frequently than for long periods of time. This can help increase
your supply.
· Pump two at once – This can also help increase
your supply, and it can lessen the time spent at the pump. A dual
pump can be very helpful.
· Nurse and pump – Especially while first learning
how, it is a good idea to be pumping breastmilk at the same time
you are breastfeeding your baby.
· Do not sip – Keep your milk supply up by not skipping
a session – if you do not have much time, then at least
pump for a lessened period of time. Some is better than none.
· Pump at the same time when your baby would normally feed.
· Relax – When you relax and get comfortable, you
will find that pumping breastmilk is easier. Ask your husband
to gently massage your shoulders.
· Baby time – To get you in the mood to start pumping
breastmilk, surround yourself with thoughts of your baby and trinkets.
Have a photo of your baby and maybe a blanket of his or hers around
you.
· Handiness – Even if you do not have a pump around
(perhaps you accidentally left it at home…), you can still
express milk. Hand expression works well for some moms.
Many mothers have trouble pumping breastmilk at first, but do
not worry, you will get the hang of it. If you do not, then it
may be worth renting a hospital grade pump and/or talking with
your doctor.
