Here are some tips for using
milk storage bags:
- Amount – You do not want to express
too much milk into your milk storage bags – you do not
want to have to waste any milk. Therefore, express just 2-4
ounces of milk into one bag – these are good for single
servings. Also have a few milk storage bags with 1 ounce of
milk in them for when your baby wants more.
- Date – Be sure to label the bags
with the date. You want to be sure that you throw out bad (or
even possibly bad) milk.
- Warm – You can warm up the milk
by gently shaking the milk storage bags under warm water –
you do not want to mircrowave it (not only could the bag melt,
but it could develop hot spots).
- Refrigeration – Unless you plan
to use the milk within four hours, be sure to place it in the
refrigerator immediately. Once refrigerated, use the milk within
4-5 days (depending on your refrigerator and doctor’s
advice, you may be able to use it within 8 days). If you cannot
use it within this time, place it in the freezer.
- Freezing – Use frozen milk within
6 months. Never refreeze thawed milk.
- Bottle – Some milk storage bags
can easily be used in a bottle.
And while milk storage bags are good and convenient, consider
using glass sometimes, too. While milk storage bags are convenient
greatly because they are disposable, glass is great because
it causes less of an environmental impact.
