Breast pumps
have made breastfeeding so much easier and more convenient for
working moms. Before the advent of good breast pumps, the term
“breastfeeding” applied only to mothers feeding their
babies at their breasts – to breastfeed, a mother had to
continuously be with her baby. Now, with the use of breast pumps,
women can breastfeed and still go back to work. This means that
the baby can stay healthy and happily fed, and the mother can
also stay healthy and working, making money for her family.
Of course, breast pumps do not only make it easier for women
to go back to work, they also make it easier for women to maintain
some level of independence overall. As much as a mother loves
her baby, it is important she gets a little time to herself (or
time spent with her husband and/or friends), even if this time
is just once a week or once a month. Breast pumps ensure that
a mother can have this time away from baby – by being able
to express milk before she goes, she can be sure that her baby
is well-fed, even while she is gone.
Now, a working mother and a stay-at-home mother are likely going
to choose different pumps. After all, a woman who rarely leaves
her baby will not need to ensure that she buys the fastest and
most effective breast pump – in fact, she may even find
that it is easiest to hand-express her milk. Or she may choose
a manual operated model or an inexpensive battery operated breast
pump.
A part-time working mother, on the other hand, should get at
least a mid-grade nursing pump. After all, while she will nurse
her baby at her breast often, she will also spend a lot of time
“at the pump.” She wants that time to be well spent.
And, in fact, it can be a good idea to nurse her baby on one breast
while pumping the other one.
A mother who works full-time is going to want a good, reliable
breast pump. She needs to make sure that she can express her milk
quickly whenever she needs to, whether she is at home or at work.
She can rent a hospital grade electric breast pump, but may do
just fine with a store-bought electric breast pump, as long as
she does not get one of the cheapest models. She should consider
buying a dual pump – she can express milk much more quickly
if she does it from both breasts at the same time. Also, a dual
breast pump can increase milk flow.
And, interestingly enough, breast pumps have brought fathers
closer to their babies. After all, many say that breastfeeding
her baby is one of the best things that a mother can do to strengthen
the mother-child bond. When a mother expresses milk via a breast
pump, a father, too, has a chance to “breastfeed”
his child. The father can feed the baby and bond with him or her.
Breast pumps have changed the world of breastfeeding.
