Breast feeding

While it is generally agreed upon that breast feeding is best both for mother and infant, some mothers should not breast feed their babies. Certain factors can make breast feeding potentially harmful for the infant. Here are a few examples of cases in which the mother should likely not breast feed:

  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) – HIV can be passed from mother to child through the milk, even if the baby was born free of the virus.
  • Tuberculosis – A mother with untreated pulmonary tuberculosis is not encouraged to breast feed. In fact, she should avoid close contact with her infant. However, it is generally stated that if she has been treated for two or more weeks and is no longer contagious, the mother can begin/continue breast feeding. Be sure to talk with a medical doctor if you have tuberculosis.
  • Heavy metals – If the mother has high levels of heavy metals like mercury, some doctors recommend that she not breast feed. A diet with a very high level of fish and shellfish can lead to high levels of mercury. It is advisable to avoid swordfish, shark, king mackerel, and tilefish – all these fish have high levels of mercury. Fish with fairly low levels of mercury include canned light tuna, shrimp, salmon, and catfish.
  • Medications – If taking medications that suppress the immune system, a mother should avoid breast feeding and speak with a medical professional. Most medications are compatible with breast feeding. If concerned about any particular medications, be sure to speak with your doctor.
  • Drugs – Cocaine, amphetamines, heroin, and other such substances can be very dangerous for both the mother and the baby. Keep in mind that tobacco and caffeine and even alcohol are generally OK if used only in moderation – women using these former substance can continue breast feeding, but may want to speak with a doctor to learn more about what levels could harm a baby.

If you have any questions as to whether or not you should be breast feeding, be sure to speak with a health professional… before you start breast feeding (and/or before you start taking certain medications.) It is good to be wary of even “simple” herbal remedies.

You want to ensure that you and your baby are as healthy has possible during your time spent breast feeding. Be sure that you are not putting any harmful substances in your body!
