While a hospital
grade breast pump is generally too expensive for anyone other
than… well, a hospital to buy, it is still possible to rent
one. There are many reasons why a mother may choose to rent a
hospital grade breast pump:
· Not able to pump – Some mothers may think that
they are unable to express milk simply because they have had no
luck with it in the past. Of course, when they previously tried,
they likely used a less-than-optimal pump. A hospital grade breast
pump may very likely help some of these mothers were unable to
express milk before.
· Mechanical problems – If you have rented your hospital
grade breast pump, you do not have to worry about any mechanical
problems: the company that owns the pump should either fix the
pump or trade it for a different one.
· Cheaper than buying – It is cheaper to rent a high
quality hospital grade breast pump than to buy one. While prices
can vary, the average is about $50+ a month. This is, of course,
more expensive than buying a cheap breast pump, but that cheap
pump may break down and likely will not express milk as effectively.
· Temporary fix – A mother who only plans to pump
milk for a week to just a few months should not have to buy an
expensive pump! Instead, she should simply rent one.
If you have decided to rent a hospital grade breast pump, you
can first check with your – surprise! – hospital.
But not all hospitals rent. Therefore, you may also want to check
lactation consultants and medical supply stores. Do not be afraid
to ask for a referral from your hospital.
