Breast feeding versus bottle feeding: this is the subject of great debate among many new and expecting mothers. When debating “breast feeding vs. bottle feeding: which is best for you and your baby?” different mothers come to different conclusions, and neither mother is necessary wrong or right. While it is almost universally accepted that breast milk is healthier for a baby than formula, there are many reasons why mothers may choose bottle feeding over breast feeding. For instance:

  • Anyone can feed the baby, not just the mother. This makes it easy for new mothers to return to work or go on outings – they can leave their babies in the care of another, knowing the babies can be fed easily.
  • The baby can be fed in public. Yes, mothers can nurse their babies in public, but they may get unwarranted dirty looks. On the other hand, no one stares at a mother bottle-feeding her baby. As long as there is a way to warm the milk, the baby can be fed anywhere.
  • With a formula, that mother does not need to be available for feeding time. The mother never needs to express her milk.
  • Bottle feeding is easier for the mother to get used to, comfort-wise, than breast feeding.
  • The mother can take whatever medications she needs to without worrying about interruption breast feeding.
  • Yes, formula does cost more than a mother’s “free” milk, but there are costs associated with breast feeding, as well. For instance, the cost of nursing bras, nursing pads, and optional breast pumps should be taken into consideration.
  • HIV can be passed from mother to baby through breast milk.
  • Alcohol and drugs and other things can also be transferred to a baby.
  • Formula has the nutrition a baby needs.
  • It is easier for adoptive mothers to feed their babies formula.

No, this information is not here to convince you to choose the formula side of the breast feeding vs. bottle feeding debate. Rather, it is here to inform you of some of the benefits of the latter side of this debate – benefits that are sometimes looked over (admittedly, even by this website), in favor of the benefits of breastfeeding.
