Breastfeeding in public

Breastfeeding in public is much more accepted now than it used to be in the past, and most people have no problem with it as long as discretion is used. In many cultures around the world, breastfeeding is accepted as natural and normal. But in the United States, breastfeeding has only seen a reoccurrence in popularity in the past 30 years. For many years, it was not thought decent for a woman to be seen breastfeeding in public.

Fortunately, though, many things have changed. Even though some people might still be uncomfortable with it, breastfeeding in public is much more common now. It is not logical for a woman to remain inside her home until the baby is weaned from breastfeeding. Nor is it logical for her to get a babysitter every time she must run an errand. Thus, either breast pumping beforehand or breastfeeding in public are the only options a new mother has.

If you are shopping or out to a restaurant, and your baby is hungry, many times, you can give them a bottle of pumped breast milk that you have been able to prepare beforehand. But if you have not had the option, then the best idea is to throw a light blanket over your shoulder and breast feed your baby. Most people take no offense to this.

It is also recommended by experts that you breastfeed your baby as often as possible compared to the bottle as the breastfeeding provides more comfort and nurturing to the baby. Also, when breastfeeding, hormones are released that make a mother feel more tender towards her child.

It is only when a woman pulls out her breast in public and feeds her baby with no discretion that it becomes offensive to some. Though it is a very natural thing to do, it is not modest and children not ready for such sights might ask questions that parents are not prepared to answer.

When a woman is breastfeeding in public and she uses discretion, it can be a beautiful thing. You can also be more discreet if you recognize the signs of hunger from your baby before he or she starts crying. If a child begins to suck on his fist or starts nuzzling against you, then they likely are hungry. It is also good for a woman to know that it is perfectly legal in all 50 states of the United States for a woman to breastfeed in public.

Breast milk is the best food a baby can have as it makes them emotionally, physically, and mentally stronger. Therefore, it is important for a woman to do her best in breastfeeding her child, and this includes the occasional need to do breastfeeding in public.
